Elliot’s endearing third outing for Oregon detective Noelle Marshall (after No One Knew) sees her teaming up with her romantic partner, FBI agent Max Rhodes, to investigate possible links between a contemporary murder and a historical serial killer. On a sunny June day, Noelle is hiking with her friend Rowan and Rowan’s search and rescue dog, Thor, in a remote section of central Oregon’s national forest. When Thor alerts on a clearing, the women realize he has located the buried remains of several people at what appears to be a serial killer’s dump site. As Noelle’s colleagues identify the remains and search for links between the victims, a woman in Deschutes County is murdered at home, and her five-year-old daughter and her mysterious housemate go missing. Elliot parallels Noelle and Max’s investigations in the present with chapters set 10 years earlier that shed light on how the remains wound up in the forest. Despite the grisly subject matter, Elliot suffuses the action with kindness and humanity, crafting morally upstanding protagonists that are worth spending time with. The result is a surprisingly tender serial killer thriller that will scratch the itch for procedural fans. Agent: Meg Ruley, Jane Rotrosen Agency. (Sept.)
