Circulation Policy


All policies are reviewed and approved by the board on a yearly basis. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about a policy, please let the director know.

Circulation Policy Highlights


All patrons who are registering for their first Kendall Young Library card or renewing their card will be asked to complete the Library Card Application form and to show one form of type written identification as proof of residence. An official state or federal I.D. number is also required.

    Loan periods (Adult Department)

  • Books, Audiobooks, Music CDs, and Sheet Music check out for 3 weeks.
  • eBooks and eAudiobooks check out for 2 weeks.
  • DVDS, Magazines, and Adult New Fiction check out for 1 week.


  • All materials may be renewed up to two times, as long as no one else has placed a hold on the item.
  • The renewal period is the same length as the initial checkout period.
  • Items can be renewed in person, by calling (515) 832-911, or by logging into your libary account online at  The default PIN for your libray account is the 4 digits of your birth month and day (MMDD).  For example, a June 22 birthday would be a PIN of 0622.


  • You have a one-day grace period after the due date.
  • $.10 per day - Books, Magazines, Audiobooks, DVDs, Sheet Music, and Music CDs
  • $.50 per day - materials borrowed on Interlibrary Loan
  • Patrons will be charged a replacement fee for items not returned.

Interlibrary Loan

 To offset postage costs Kendall Young Library will charge patrons $3.00 for each ILL item requested.

Placing Holds

  • Log into your online account to place the hold yourself.  Or, you can visit or call (515) 832-9100, and we will place the hold for you!

Fax charges

  • Outgoing - $3.00 cover sheet, $1.00 each additional sheet
  • Incoming - $3.00 first page, $1.00 each additional sheet
