Olive Carter, a BBC trainee, is sent to report on the Royal family's Christmas traditions at Sandringham House in 1952 when she accidentally meets the young Queen Elizabeth II, who asks Olive to help her with her first Christmas Day radio message. Later, Olive discovers that her old friend, Jack Devereux, is now working in the Queen's kitchen. It has been seven years since the two met on VE Day in 1945. They were attracted to each other, but then became involved with other partners. Now, Jack is a widower and Olive is a struggling single mother. Over the next few years, the two will meet again at Christmas at Sandringham and on a Royal yacht tour. As their feelings grow, events, misunderstandings, and an old secret keep them apart. As the narrative alternates between Jack's and Olive's voices in 1945 and the 1950s, the reader sees both sides of their relationship and glimpses the lives of the young Queen and her husband Prince Philip. This heartwarming tale weaves together Christmas and a second chance at love into one charming story.
