In the early 1900s, women couldn’t stay overnight unaccompanied, couldn’t work the same jobs as men, and had no place to gather and educate themselves on issues where they could make a difference. Daisy Harriman changed all that when she created the first women’s club in Manhattan, a place for lectures and overnight stays, with meeting rooms, a restaurant, and exercise facilities. But she didn’t do this alone. Nora Bromley, a young architect, was assigned to help design the Colony Club, along with former actress Elsie de Wolfe, who had an amazing talent for interior decoration. Noble's latest (after Picture Perfect Autumn, 2023) is a thrilling historical novel about women's struggles, sprinkled with a love story, themes of familial angst and true friendship, and even a murder (based on the true story of architect Stanford White). Keeping up with the change of perspectives within the same chapter can be challenging, but readers will be invested in each character and her plight, especially Nora. This is an inspiring must-read for anyone interested in the feats of women in the early twentieth century.
